SS Great Britain in Globe

A message in a bottle with a difference. A tiny model of the SS Great Britain fits inside this glass globe, tied at the top with a red ribbon and closed with a cork.

Built in Bristol and launched in 1843, the SS Great Britain was the biggest ship in the world at the time. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was the first ocean-going ship made of metal with an underwater propeller. Today it is thought of as the first 'modern' ship.

The SS Great Britain Trust (registered charity no. 262158) conserves the SS Great Britain at Bristol Dockyards, as well as carrying out STEM education and community outreach work. Every pound spent in the Bristol Dockyards shop goes back to supporting the charity.
