Joseph Walter was an English artist, gaining notice for his portrayals of Brunel's SS Great Britain and SS Great Western. This painting shows the launch of the SS Great Britain into Bristol's Floating Harbour on 19th July 1843.

This image has been instrumental in the ongoing conservation of the ship, and informed how she is now decorated in her current setting as a museum.
