The steamship Great Britain was built in Bristol in 1843, and was the biggest ship in the world at the time. The SS Great Britain was the first ocean-going ship made of metal, and the first to use an underwater propeller. Because of this, she is thought of as the first modern ship.

At Bristol Dockyards, we work to preserve the SS Great Britain, and share her history through our museums. Every pound spent in the Bristol Dockyards shop helps to fund our charitable aims, and share the ship's story with the world.
