Built in Bristol and launched in 1843, the SS Great Britain was the biggest ship in the world at the time. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was the first ocean-going ship made of metal with an underwater propeller. Today it is thought of as the first 'modern' ship.

Ships in bottles were often made by passengers and crew while at sea, as a way to pass the time. This dimple bottle contains a tiny replica of the SS Great Britain.

The SS Great Britain Trust (registered charity no. 262158) conserves the SS Great Britain at Bristol Dockyards, as well as carrying out STEM education and community outreach work. Every pound spent in the Bristol Dockyards shop goes back to supporting the charity.
