Rats were a part of life on all ships throughout history, and our very own Rattus Rattus is modelled on the specific breed that would be found at sea. Some diary entries from passengers who sailed on the SS Great Britain mention being woken up in the night by rats nibbling their toes!

This rat is more on the cuddly side, and less likely to chew your toes, steal your socks or eat your food.
